ENGLISH:
Find a blend of traditional and modern in the buildings,
particularly those in the town center.
Long known as a health resort, with nearby thermal springs,
St-Gervais is a less expensive alternative to Megeve.

The ski circus that connects the two towns allows skiers to ascend almost to the top of Mont Joly,
nearly a mile higher than the town of St. Gervais, whose elevation is less than 2,200 feet.

But skiers who stay in St-Gervais buy a common lift pass that enables them to ski
four other areas in which there are an additional 360 miles of marked trails
and more than double the number of lifts.

St-Gervais-Mont Blanc is 43 miles from the gateway city of Geneva,
Switzerland, and a little more than that from the stunning medieval city of Annecy in France.

In winter, cable cars take skiers up to Le Bettex and Le Mont d’Arbois as well as pedestrians!

Histoire:
1936 : 1er téléphérique à Saint Gervais
Dès décembre 1936, au départ de Saint Gervais (900 mètres),
la nouvelle benne est capable de monter 24 skieurs (144 personne à l’heure)
au Bettex (1350 mètres). Soit un dénivelé de 450 mètres sur une longueur de 2400 mètres.

1937 : le Bettex – Mont d’Arbois
Charles Viard propose de continuer l’équipement des crêtes d’Arbois
par un téléphérique qui donnerait à Saint Gervais le record de longueur de l’époque (5 km).

ENGLISH:
The JUNGFRAU REGION south of Interlaken is the rather uninspiring title foisted on what is perhaps the most dramatic, certainly the most memorable, mountain scenery in the whole of Switzerland.

The Matterhorn may be more recognizable, Davos and St Moritz may be flashier, but the quantity and sheer scale of the awesome giants on offer here at close quarters takes your breath away.

The area is dominated by the mighty triple crest of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (Ogre, Monk and Virgin) – three giant peaks rising side-by-side to 4000m and seemingly always mentioned in the same breath.

The Jungfrau is the focus, partly because it’s the highest (at 4158m), and partly because the network of mountain trains from Interlaken Ost culminates at the Jungfraujoch, a saddle below the Jungfrau peak that claims the honour of being the site of the highest train station in Europe.

The ride up to the summit – dubbed the “Top of Europe” – is touted endlessly in Interlaken and beyond as being the highlight of a Swiss visit and, despite the hype, it’s not far wrong. However, plenty of equally stunning scenery is also to be had at lower altitudes. The region is focused on two valleys, which divide a few kilometres south of Interlaken.

To the west is the famous Lauterbrunnen valley, celebrated with justification as the loveliest mountain valley in Europe, with its alluring resorts of Wengen and Mürren. To the east, the narrow Lütschen valley widens out on its way to the bustling town of Grindelwald, perfectly placed for its many visitors to take advantage of the hiking and skiing possibilities all around.

Excellent transport around all these places – mostly trains, but also taking in cable-cars, funiculars and the odd bus – means that you can roam to your heart’s content, which, with the quality of natural scenery on offer, may take a while. Source

L’Oberland bernois est séparé des Alpes valaisannes par la vallée du Rhône. Entièrement situé en Suisse (dans l’espace assez restreint compris entre l’Aar, au nord et le Rhône, au sud), ce massif d’une très grande ampleur compte neuf sommets de plus de 4000 mètres. On y trouve également le plus long glacier des Alpes, le glacier d’Aletsch et la plus difficile paroi de la chaîne alpine, l’Eigerwand ou face nord de l’Eiger. Ce sommet, qui porte bien son nom, est donc devenu la fierté des habitants de Grindelwald et de tout le massif.

Aucune vallée ne pénètre réellement à l’intérieur du massif. Au nord, dans le canton de Berne, la ville d’Interlaken séparant les lacs de Brienz et de Thoune, est un des lieux les plus visités de la Suisse. Au pied du massif, dans un cadre somptueux et dans la vallée des deux Lütschines, Mürren, Wengen et Grindelwald ont atteint la notoriété mondiale. En effet, de Grindelwald,  » le village des glaciers « , une voie ferrée à crémaillère mène rapidement à la Kleine Scheidegg (d’où la vue sur le triptyque Jungfrau, Mönch, Eiger est merveilleuse) puis au Jungfraujoch, à 3400 mètres d’altitude, ce qui attire chaque année un très grand nombre de touristes. Dans la partie occidentale du massif, la Lötschental, vallée de Kippel, donne l’accès à quelques sommets de l’Oberland comme le Bietschhorn, par exemple. Au sud, dans la vallée du Rhône et en amont de Brigue (canton du Valais), la vallée de Conches débouche sur le glacier d’Aletsch, le plus long des Alpes. Au nord de la vallée de Conches, Gletsch s’est installé tout près de la source du Rhône, non loin du glacier du même nom et du col de Grimsel.

Il ne faut pas confondre l’Oberland bernois avec les Alpes bernoises, préalpes situées à proximité du massif, dans le canton de Berne. Celles-ci, d’une altitude relativement modeste, sont d’ailleurs bien distinctes de l’Oberland.

Les sommets de l’Oberland bernois sont nombreux et variés. Le point culminant, le Finsteraarhorn (4273m) est un sommet aux lignes harmonieuses et formant une magnifique pointe rocheuse d’une altitude élevée. Dominant le merveilleux glacier d’Aletsch, l’Aletschhorn (4195m), deuxième sommet du massif, est une immense pyramide de glace d’où la vue sur l’Oberland et le Valais est vraiment superbe. Mais le sommet le plus élégant de l’Oberland est sans aucun doute la Jungfrau (4158m) qui constitue avec le Mönch (4099m) et l’Eiger (3970m) un des plus beaux paysages des Alpes. Source

The Schilthorn cable-car from Stechelberg leaps the valley’s west wall to reach the idyllically quiet hamlet of GIMMELWALD, a little-visited spot set among meadows ablaze with spring and summer wildflowers.

You have to switch cable-cars to rise further to car-free MÜRREN, an eyrie of a village set on an elevated shelf of pasture which has managed to retain its endearing desert-island atmosphere (in the off season at least).

La base de Blofeld était vraiment un restaurant partiellement complété au sommet de la montagne Mount Shilthorn. Les propriétaires on permis le filmage dans leur restaurant si ils étaient payé 125,000$ et la création d’un helicopter pad. Quand le restaurant a ouvert, c’était sous le nom de Piz Gloria.
