Centering the Thermal

When entering a strong thermal, you feel yourself swinging forward under your wing and being pulled up.
You must reduce you braking and give your wing speed during this phase. If you initiate a hard turn at this time, you risk a Spin (Recovery)…
Once installed in the thermal, reduce your speed but not more than minimum sink rate speed.
More important than using your wing’s best sink rate, you must concentrate on Centering the Thermal (using a Vario). When exiting a thermal, get ready to control the dive of your wing (ahead of you), by increasing the braking during the wing’s dive (release the brakes when the wing is at its most forward point)

If one follows the indications of his variometer : If it indicates an increase in the climb rate, open up your turn (you may even go straight). If the rate of climb diminishes, tighten your turn as we would otherwise be moving away from the center of the thermal.

There is no need to delay your response to your variometer, since it typically indicates the average over the last second of readings.
This technique is good for wide thermal lift without a sharp increase in climb rate at its center.
It can also serve to find better thermal cores when multiple thermals merge with altitude.

Une île aux oiseaux à l’embouchure de la Venoge
Située au coude nord
du Léman, la baie de Préverenges fonctionne comme un butoir pour les oiseaux
migrateurs arrivant du lac au printemps, revenus d’Afrique et en route pour
leurs lointains quartiers d’été, dans la toundra arctique. Plus de 230 espèces y
ont été identifiées à ce jour, ce qui en fait un des hauts lieux de
l’ornithologie helvétique, révélé en 1943 déjà par Charles Chessex. Les
hauts-fonds exondés au printemps près de l’embouchure de la Venoge attirent de
nombreux petits échassiers (limicoles), mouettes, goélands et sternes, tentés de
faire escale pour se reposer et se nourrir avant de poursuivre leur voyage, long
de plusieurs milliers de kilomètres. Les longues pattes et le bec effilé sont
une adaptation exclusive aux vasières peu profondes qu’ils doivent
impérativement trouver sur leur chemin pour reconstituer leurs réserves
d’énergie. Malheureusement, les rivages naturels ont pratiquement disparu avec
l’urbanisation croissante. Les grèves situées à proximité de l’embouchure de la
Venoge ne sont exondées qu’une partie du printemps et n’offrent aucune
possibilité d’escale pendant la migration d’automne. De plus, les dérangements
fréquents, notamment des chiens non tenus en laisse, perturbent sans cesse les
oiseaux.

Face à cette situation, le Cercle Ornithologique de Lausanne
(COL), en collaboration avec Pro Natura Vaud et le Groupe Ornithologique et de
Sciences naturelles de Morges et environs (GOS), a élaboré un projet d’île aux
oiseaux à proximité de l’embouchure de la Venoge. Cette île, située à une
centaine de mètres de la rive, sera composée d’un enrochement en forme d’arc de
190 mètres de long abritant un banc de sable et de graviers. Étant en toute
saison exondée, elle offrira une capacité d’accueil optimale pour les oiseaux.
Elle constituera un attrait pour les promeneurs qui pourront observer ces
migrateurs dans d’excellentes conditions.
